Citizenship by Investment in Grenada: Passing Citizenship to Children and Spouses
Grenada Citizenship by investment offers more than visa-free access and global mobility — it secures full nationality rights that can extend to future generations. Once citizenship is granted under the CBI Programme, investors are recognised as full Grenadian citizens, equal in status to those who acquire nationality by birth or naturalisation. This means children born after citizenship approval may qualify for CBI by descent, while a spouse married after citizenship is granted may apply for registration under CBI by marriage.

One of the most significant advantages of obtaining citizenship under Grenada’s Citizenship by Investment (CBI) Programme is that successful applicants become full Grenadian citizens, with the same core nationality rights as other citizens guaranteed via the Constitution of Grenada.
A recurring question among investors and families is whether citizenship obtained through investment can be passed on to a child or a spouse. The answer, in short, is yes — Grenadian law allows both.
Grenada’s Citizenship by Investment Programme, established under the Grenada Citizenship by Investment Act 2013 as amended, grants approved applicants’ citizenship following due diligence and payment of the qualifying investment. Once an individual has been granted citizenship, that individual is not merely a resident or conditional national of Grenada but a citizen of Grenada. There is no distinction for nationality purposes between citizens who obtained that status by way of investing in Grenada, in comparison to those who acquire citizenship by birth, naturalisation or by descent.

Citizenship by Descent: Children Born After CBI Citizenship is granted
Subsequent to becoming a Grenadian, any child born to a Grenadian citizen is entitled to be a Grenadian by virtue of being the descendant of a Grenadian. Put simply, where an individual becomes a Grenadian citizen through the CBI Programme, any child born thereafter is eligible to claim Grenadian citizenship through that parent, subject to the normal registration procedures applicable to citizenship by descent.
Citizenship by marriage: Spouse after CBI, Citizenship is granted
The Constitution of Grenada permits the spouse of a Grenadian citizen to be registered as a citizen on application. Therefore, once an individual becomes a Grenadian citizen through the CBI Programme, any spouse he or she marries after obtaining citizenship may apply to be a Grenadian by virtue of their spouse being a Grenadian citizen. That application for citizenship is independent from the CBI application.

Spouse and Children prior to CBI Citizenship being granted
If an individual is married and applying for citizenship via the CBI Programme, it is best to have their spouse as part of the CBI application, as that spouse will not be treated in the same manner as an individual who marries a Grenadian citizen. That is, the spouse will not be able to ascertain citizenship by virtue of being married to a Grenadian. Instead, that spouse will have to apply to be a Grenadian via the CBI programme or be naturalised as a Grenadian after living in Grenada for the required statutory period.
In relation to children born prior to a parent becoming a Grenadian, those children are not entitled to be Grenadian via descent. Instead, such children will have to apply via the CBI programme to be Grenadian or be naturalised as Grenadian after living in Grenada for the required statutory period.
